When it comes to newborn photos I just love props. Before every session I get input from my clients so I can create a unique and personalized session. Things like nursery theme, nursery color, favorite hobbies, decorating style, etc really help me get a feel for the parents and what they like/dislike. One of my favorite things is incorporating these things into the session, this is when props really come in handy! I’ve showcased duck decoys, golf clubs, Star Wars characters, family heirlooms and even the family pet! The great thing about props is it really opens up your options for adding color and variety in the photos. You can take a photo from so many different angles with baby in a basket, each with a completely different feel just based on the angle you are shooting at. My favorite kinds of props are baskets that are about a foot high, sturdy but not too distracting so the focus still stays on baby. Certain larger baskets can be used for overhead shots as well as shots where baby is resting their head on their folded arms.
As with all newborn photos, safety is the number one priority and in many of these photos you see, a parent was sitting right beside baby while I was taking the photo. Safety is always paramount when working with these tiny humans!
I’ve added some of my favorite prop photos below, do you have a favorite image?
